The Queen of Motown, Mary Wells had a voice that could melt an iceberg. Blessed with the sweetest but most soulful soprano. Mary was great at ballads but could easily sing songs that required more punch and on "Bye Bye Baby" she almost puts a growl into the song sounding almost like a Mississippi Preacher.
"What Love Has Joined Together" was actually a B-Side to "Old Stand-By". It was rare that a singers B-Side would be played but it was normal for Mary Wells.
She was at her best singing compositions by Smokey Robinson. If Dionne Warwick was the perfect voice to deliver Burt Bacharach & Hal David compositions, than Mary Wells was the perfect voice for Smokey. Actually the combo of Mary Wells and Smokey Robinson is even better!
