MORNING CUP OF SOUL - NINA SIMONE - MY BABY JUST CARES FOR ME [LIVE]
Nina Simone is known as The High Priestess of Soul. She was singer/songwriter/pianist/activist and she was fierce way before Tyra Banks and Beyonce. She did not simply ask for respect but she commanded respect where ever she was present.
She demanded that her music not be referred to Jazz but rather to as Black Classical music. Some call her the black Bach or the woman version of Thelonious Monk because of her extraordinary pianist skills.
Her voice was like no other before or after. A deep alto that would reach tenor lows and sometimes even baritone notes. Yet her voice was still feminine and could bounce with joy and at the same time dig deep into sorrow. Her music was always raw but went down smooth to the soul like a great bottle of Bourbon.
The High Priestess of Soul died in 2003 but her music lives on. From covers on American Idol, recorded covers done by everyone from Aretha Franklin to Marilyn Manson, and the sampling of her work from the huge artists today: Lil Wayne and Timbaland. A movie is planned on her life with Mary J. Blige playing Nina Simone.
Here is The High Priestess of Soul, Nina Simone performing "My Baby Just Cares For Me" Live at the Montreux Jazz Festival.
