Queen of Gospel Albertina Walker dies at age 81

I am extremely saddened to report that a Gospel music legend has passed away. The Queen of Gospel Albertina Walker has died at the age of 81. The Grammy award winning singer died of respiratory failure in Chicago at RML Specialty Hospital in Chicago.

Albertina Walker was blessed with a powerful contralto and a unique vocal style. However, it was her contributions to the genre of Gospel music that made her the Queen of Gospel. She not only contributed with many memorable and now staple Gospel songs (“I’m Still Here”, “I Can Go To God In Prayer, Lord Keep Me Day by Day) but she contributed by nurturing talent. The world must give thanks to God for sending such a wonderful woman to give artists like: Shirley Caesar, Inez Andrews, Dorothy Norwood, and the late King of Gospel James Cleveland through what can now be viewed as a Gospel super group (The Caravans).

Albertina Walker was a lifelong member of West Point Baptist Church in Chicago, IL.

I personally would like to say this: Albertina, I know you are where the Lord will keep you day by day. You may no longer still be physically here on this earth but your music will live forever. God bless you and thank you for sharing your wonderful musical gift with the world.
