Morning Cup of Soul - Valerie Simpson - I Don't Need No Help

This song comes from Valerie Simpson’s (the half of Ashford & Simpson duo) “Exposed” album. This is the first of her two solo albums on Motown. I feel that this is one of the best albums that came out of Motown on par with Marvin Gaye’s What’s Going and Stevie Wonder’s Innervisions. Unfortunately it did not get the acceptance of those two albums.

Valerie Simpson: Exposed is packed with deep Soul you would find in recordings from Stax. Simpson plays the Piano with Gospel fervor where she rivals Aretha Franklin on the piano.

“I Don’t Need Help” starts with just her voice and when the song builds, Simpson tears into her Piano. Simpson has the same sweet qualities in her voice as Diana Ross but a much stronger and Gospel influence in it. It baffles me that Valerie Simpson did not have a huge solo career at Motown.
